IDC is looking for a Research Director to lead the European Services Research and to develop, articulate and drive the research of IDC's core European Services program as well as make a significant contribution to custom market consulting projects.

This role presents an opportunity to head our European Services team, and to influence the direction of the IT services industry in Europe. You will set the research agenda, vision and direction of the team, as well as being the outward face of IDC services research in Europe.


The successful candidate will be expected to lead the European Services research agenda by:

  • Leading IDC’s research and strategic advisory in IT Services
  • Creating thought-leading topics and themes in the services domain, and produce or direct research papers covering the industry and its implications for vendors and end-user organisations.
  • Providing timely, insightful and relevant commentary on industry events in Europe or that have European relevance.
  • Being the primary face of IDC’s coverage of IT services in Europe, presenting on a variety of services topics at IDC and external events and webinars.
  • Leading delivery of market intelligence briefings.
  • Liaising with IDC’s worldwide services team to help define taxonomies, research focus areas and market forecasts.
  • Being a trusted advisor to IDC’s clients.
  • Supporting business development initiatives. This is not a business development role, but it is essential that this leadership role liaises with our sales and consulting teams to drive business.

There will also be opportunities to raise the profile of IDC's European Services Research through public speaking engagements and media interviews.

The successful candidate will also be expected to play a lead role in participating and driving growth in European Services executive virtual round tables and Executive Dinners.


This position is a leadership position within IDC's European ICT research team. This position calls for an individual with excellent communication, management, presentation and writing skills, allied to good numeric and analytic skills. We seek a quick and creative thinker with deep curiosity about developments in the IT Services market, someone who can lead and motivate a team, as well as collaborate effectively across the broader organization.  

You will have at least 10 years in an analyst role, or possibly in a technology/business consulting firm, in the market intelligence or product marketing division of an IT supplier / System Integrator, or with a major technology user company.. You will have a broad understanding of the entire IT services industry in Europe, with exposure to a cross section of IT technologies across IT Services sub-domain areas (Systems Integration, IT consulting, Managed Services, Deploy and Support).

The successful candidate will be someone who can demonstrate:

  • A vision of the IT Services industry in Europe, including technological, regulatory, and cultural aspects of the region
  • A vision of IDC's coverage of the services area, including services portfolio evolution, impact and growth potential of cloud, Automation/AI/ML, Data, Sustainability
  • Experience in managing a small but expert group of individuals across multiple geographies.
  • A grasp of the importance of business development to the success of the team, and a willingness and ability to engage internally with sales and consultants and externally with prospective clients to drive business.
  • An understanding of the IT industry analyst world, either directly from an analyst background or in interactions with analysts, most likely in a vendor-based role.
  • Experience in managing client projects and client relationships that result in repeatable business with clients
  • Excellent presentation and written communication skills, and fluency in written and oral English is required: fluency in a second European language would be advantageous.

The role will involve some travel, predominantly in Europe but occasionally to other regions.

In addition to a competitive remuneration package, IDC offers the chance to join a research team in the industry's foremost provider of market intelligence, providing expert advice and knowledge to major institutions and organisations in Europe.

We envisage that this role will be based in London. However, we will accept applications from exceptional candidates outside the UK and able to work in IDC’s office in Prague, Milan, Copenhagen, Frankfurt or Munich.


The application process

The selection process will take place in several phases, starting with several initial telephone-based discussions before progressing to a first formal interview at IDC's offices or by videoconference. At this stage candidates will be required to submit an example of analytical writing, based on a topic provided. A second formal interview will complete the process, during which candidates will demonstrate their presentation skills.
